Brandon Twp – Witnesses say 34 year-old Serena Camacho was driving too fast and crossed the double line when she hit two teens head-on.
At 3:50 p.m. Oct. 9 two teens, 17 and 19, from West Bloomfield escaped serious injury after their vehicle careened into a ditch from the impact of the crash. The driver suffered a dislocated shoulder.
“She was driving so fast and hit them hard,” witness Rebecca Wargin said.
“She passed us and was about to pass another car when she hit them.”
Both Wargin and her friend Christin Dangel witnessed the crash, moments after Ortonville resident Serena Camacho passed them, heading west on Seymour Lake Road.
Both girls said Camacho was driving at a high rate of speed when she passed over the double line, then passed another car and attempted to pass a third when she hit the West Bloomfield teens.
Another witness, Sherrie Keener of Brandon said it was unbelievable that the two boys were alive.
Keener said it was a scary scene. After the cars came to rest in the wooded ditch, Keener checked to see if Camacho was injured and then ran over to the boys who were still in their car.
“I went to them because he (the driver) was screaming,” said Keener.
“He was on the phone with his dad so I took the phone and told dad he was going to be OK.”
“If it were my kid I’d want someone to help him out,” said Keener.
In a close call for two Brandon Sheriff deputies, who responded to the crash, as paramedics loaded the patients into the ambulance a delivery truck was unable to stop at the scene, skidding 477 feet through the accident scene, causing both deputies to jump off the road into the ditch to avoid being hit.
“We jumped pretty quick,” said Deputy, Mike Garrison.
“We ended up in the ditch too.”
“The driver said he was driving a truck that he didn’t normally run and the brakes were not adjusted.”
The drivers of both crash vehicles were transported by Brandon Fire Department ALS paramedics to Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital.
Camacho, who was on probation from two previous DUIL’s, was arrested with a blood alcohol level of .195. Currently Camacho is in jail on a $30,000 cash bond.
The driver of the truck that blew through the accident scene was ticketed for defective brakes.
