Brandon Twp.- Hungry kids?
Free meals are available four days a week from Aug. 1-18 at Oakwood Elementary.
The ‘Meet Up and Eat Up’ summer food service program is returning after a 1-year hiatus.
“Last year, there was no summer school at Oakwood,” said Suzanne Evenson, district food services director. “This year, there will be a math and reading program and we anticipate serving 100 kids in the program and probably another 50 kids from outside the program.”
The federally funded summer food service program is available to all children under the age of 18, regardless of family income, and persons up to age 26 who are enrolled in an educational program for the mentally or physically disabled that is recognized by a state or local public education agency.
Breakfast will be served from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from Aug. 1-18 at Oakwood Elementary, 2839 Oakwood Road.
The program is designed to ensure all children receive nutritious meals during the summer, when the free or reduced price meals offered during the school year are not available. In order to receive the grant, the school building in which it is located must have more than 50 percent of its students eligible for free or reduced price meals.
“I love the program, it offers a full meal, both at breakfast and lunch, for any student in the area,” said Evenson. “You don’t have to income qualify or be in the tutoring program.”
