Credit card fraud
At noon, July 6, Brandon deputies responded to a report of fraud. The victim called to say someone had used her credit card online. The victim said she had opened a credit card online and the card was sent to her residence in April of this year. She activated the card then, however, she never used it as of the day she called. In addition, she also never received a statement, and thinks that was because the statements were sent online. She was notified by her bank that the credit card company had made a large withdraw of $1,600 from her account to cover over draft charges on her credit card. She inquired and discovered that someone used her credit card through PayPal and online between April and June. She found over 200 transactions totaling over $5,000. He told deputies that when he began to pay off all of the deceased’s bills, he received a piece of mail at the post office, where the deceased’s mail was being held. He said the mail was a credit card bill under the deceased’s name. When he opened the bill, he saw transactions from two months after the deceased had passed, and ending in June. He said he suspects the man’s daughter had opened the account and did not know when it was opened and it is the first time he had seen the bill from that company under his name.
