Karey Hart, a theatre arts specialist at Stadium Elementary School of the Arts in Lake Orion, was recently awarded a $1,100 grant from the MEEMIC Foundation for the Future of Education.
She petitioned the foundation for funds to support two original musical productions created by the school’s fourth and fifth graders.
According the Hart, ‘Our intent with this grant was to offer roughly 170 students the opportunity to envision and create their own musical productions.
The students will be involved in every aspect of the creative process, including but not limited to, set design and construction, lighting design and implementation, script writing, choreography acting, composing, performing with instruments and stage managing.?
‘For the past 54 years, MEEMIC Insurance Company has offered discounted auto, home, boat and umbrella insurance to educational employees,? said Kristy Mitchell, director of the foundation.
‘In 1992, the foundation was started for the express purpose of giving back to the educational community.
‘In that spirit, we’re delighted to acknowledge the wonderful work being done by Lake Orion teachers such as Karey Hart and are only too happy to support her project through our mini-grant program.?
According to Mitchell, over 300 applications were received for the grant. Twelve were awarded.
Hart was presented with a check at a special ceremony at the school on Jan. 20.
