Buy their ‘votes-ism’-With your ‘money-ism’
Dear Editor,
There is a movement afoot to persuade the federal government to “forgive” student loans. Which actually means for the government to use your tax dollars to pay off other people’s loans.
The loans were incurred when students wanted to prepare for their futures, to enable them to earn a living, certainly a worthwhile goal compared to sitting around and expecting the government to pay a “guaranteed basic income” or other trendy welfare benefits. But, an education costs money, so the students and their families borrowed money from banks, got the educations, and now don’t want to pay the money back. So, the Biden administration is nobly pushing to pay it back for them. With your money.
But, if a young man or woman wants to earn a living by being a farmer, borrows money to buy the necessary land and doesn’t want to pay it back, shouldn’t the government “forgive” that debt? And if a young man or woman wants to earn a living by running a restaurant, auto repair shop, or other small business, borrows money to buy or start that business and doesn’t want to pay it back, shouldn’t the government “forgive” that debt? And if a young man or woman wants to earn a living as a gig worker with Uber or delivering groceries and packages, borrows money to buy the necessary car and doesn’t want to pay it back, shouldn’t the government “forgive” that debt?
Some people would call that creeping (or leaping) Socialism. Let’s call it what it really is: “Buy Their Votes-ism”. With your money-ism.
