Village to continue Tree Planting Program

The Village of Oxford’s Tree Planting Program has been a huge success for the past three years thanks to the participation of private citizens and through the budgeted funds of Oxford’s DPW.
There have been 172 trees planted in the village during this period. Six of those trees were special disease free elms from the Elm Research Institute in New Hampshire, which were planted on a trial basis two years ago. They have done well, growing at a rate of approximately two feet per year. Other trees are primarily Autumn Blaze Maples, with a few Bradford Pears and some other low growing shrub-types under power lines.
This year, the desire is to continue the program throughout the village and continue to plant along Lakeville Rd., begun two years ago, and Glaspie St., begun this past year.
Further, with the positive result of the elm program, we want to begin an Elm Nursery Project. This program would purchase 24 small elms from the Research Institute and grow them at the DPW complex until they are large enough to transplant. This type of program has been done in Roseville very successfully and assists in cutting costs, since purchasing large trees is very expensive.
The cost of a 1?-inch Autumn Blaze maple is $70 and a Bradford Pear is $40. Home owners and businesses are encouraged to participate. Contributions can be made to the Village of Oxford and is tax deductible.
