A ground level apartment on Lancasterhill, at the Lancaster Lakes complex off of Dixie Highway in Clarkston, caught fire after its 43-year-old renter left a screw driver charging with a different charger unit. Police reports stated the charging unit appeared to have heated up, catching the bedroom door and wall on fire. The one bedroom apartment was heavily damaged and other apartments in the building suffered some smoke damage.
No one was home at the time of the fire, at approximately 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, and only two residents within the building were in their apartments and had to be evacuated while the Independence Township Fire Department extinguished the flames. The renter’s two cats died from smoke inhalation.
The renter has no insurance.
