Independence Township has many talented artists who are ready to showcase their work.
Independence Township Clerk Joan McCrary is organizing a kickoff for “The Art of Independence” on Friday, Sept. 19.
The artists’ reception will feature at least 15 local artists displaying their work in the meeting room at the Independence Township Library.
Last year local artists began to hang work in the library. However, a new security system now allows the room to be unlocked during library hours so McCrary thought this was a great time to kick-off a 2003-04 season.
“We wanted to bring everyone together,” McCrary said. “We will have a sign up sheet for artists to sign up to display their works during specific months. We are already filled through December.”
Among the artists slated to display their works at the reception are Jean Cavalier, Judy Hoddinott, Del Miller and Carol Morino.
“We have so many talented artists in our area. We want to give people the opportunity to come out and see it for themselves. There are a lot of talent people don’t know about,” McCrary said.
McCrary has sent out invitations to many artists, including art teachers, in hopes there is a big turnout. The public is welcome and will be able to purchase artists’ works. Light refreshments will be served. The event is from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Independence Township Library located at 6495 Clarkston Road.
“We have not had an active arts council in Independence Township for awhile so we hope this might start something,” McCrary said. “I think it is important to showcase artists in the community. It helps to bring culture to the community.”
