Austin Moore couldn’t be more excited to complete his middle school career and move on to ninth grade.
‘I’m excited for high school because it’s so much bigger and different. I want to meet new people,? said Moore, a Scripps Middle School eighth grader who attended the annual orientation at Lake Orion High School on Feb. 12.
To start off the night, eighth grade students and their parents attended a short introductory meeting in the auditorium.
Administrators spoke glowingly of the high school and about what the students should expect as they journey into their freshman year.
The kids were then released into The Commons where tables were set up representing each subject, sport and club the school has to offer.
There were refreshments offered in the center of the lunch room and the marketing class opened up the LO Stop N Shop to all eighth graders and their families. Free slushies were handed out in six flavors and students got a head start on purchasing LO gear.
‘The turnout tonight is awesome,? said Assistant Principal Chris Bell. ‘We do this every year because it is such a great opportunity for the parents and the kids to feel at home in this building. I am absolutely excited for this incoming class. I have heard nothing but great things about them.?
As eighth graders journeyed to each table, current high school students did their part to promote their club and make the kids feel comfortable. Every club and sport the school has to offer was represented.
Each table had flyers and displays to give the kids an idea of what to expect if they join. Some clubs got creative and included videos, robots, trophies and many more examples to highlight their groups.
Emily Franchy, of Waldon Middle School, made the rounds.
‘I’m mostly looking forward to the school’s drama department,? said Franchy.
The students were also given the opportunity to speak with their assigned counselor and go over their ninth grade schedules.
They could sit down and discuss their options for classes and more.
‘I’m very excited to meet new people, find new friends, and most of all, new girls,? said Justin Frank of Oakview Middle School. ‘Its going to be so much more exciting than middle school.?
