For the past two years, the Brandon High School Student Council has held a charity week, collecting funds for a charity designated by the Michigan Association of Student Councils.
And during the past few years, the BHS students have won the MASC/MAHS ‘Tonya? State Charity Award, given to the school that raises the most money per student enrolled in the building for the year’s chosen charity.
This year, the BHS Student Council is hoping to outdo themselves, with a charity drive that runs not just for one week, but for three months, and they are seeking contributions from not just staff and students, but the community as a whole as they wage war on cystic fibrosis, a recessive genetic disorder that causes mucus to build up in the lungs and affects other vital organs. Persons with cystic fibrosis often suffer difficulty breathing, have frequent lung infections, and have an average lifespan of 37 years.
BHS students are collecting donations for the Rock CF Foundation, an organization committed to the fight against this deadly disease.
‘We have a goal of $15,000 to donate to Rock CF,? said Rachel Neal, a member of the BHS Student Council. ‘Our charity drive began in December and will go on until March. This is for a really good cause and if you have any money to spare, it would be a great help.?
So far, the student council has raised more than $8,000 through a student ‘Jail ‘n Bail,? breakfast sales, charity dinners and a penny drive.
