Brandon Twp. — During the Monday night meeting, the Brandon Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a change from four-year terms to six-year terms to board of education members.
The transition to six-year terms will be complete with the 2028 election cycle.
“As the Brandon Board of Education strives for excellence when serving the students and families of the Brandon School District, we recently researched the impact of four year and six year terms for board members,” said Rebecca Haynes, board president. “Through our research we learned that six year terms bring more stability for a school district while also providing more time for growth and development as a board. We also learned that 50% of the state’s school boards have 6 year terms, with stability for a district and growth as a board as the primary reasons for six year terms.”
The state of Michigan requires the board to have elections every even election year, and the current four-year term structure has an alternating cycle of four open positions in one election, and three open positions in the next.
“A transition to 6 year terms provides a term cycle of 2, 2, and 3 on even election years,” she said. “We are excited to continue to move the Brandon School District forward in a positive direction.”
