As summer officially approaches, the Brandon varsity softball team is turning up the heat on the competition.
The Blackhawks held their two most recent opponents, Auburn Hills Avondale and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, without a run to capture the district title June 4 at Brandon.
Brandon defeated Avondale 10-0 in the district semifinal and Notre Dame Prep 3-0 in the district final to improve to 29-9-1 on the season.
In the district final, the Irish and Blackhawks battled to a draw until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Brandon pushed three runners across home plate.
Brandon had five hits in the contest to four for Prep. Jill Perry earned the win for the Blackhawks, striking out five to improve her record to 18-4-1. Chelsea Wengren drove in two runs for the Blackhawks, while Jessica Liebner drove in the other Brandon run.
In the semifinal win against Avondale, Jackie Wojtkowicz struck out 13 and allowed only two hits in picking up the win for the Blackhawks, as she boosted her season mark to 11-4.
Lauren Ross put the Blackhawks ahead 3-0 in the third inning with a three-run home run, and Brandon added six runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth for good measure.
Ross went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Liebner also went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
