Brandon Twp.- The school board and Superintendent Lorrie McMahon have agreed to a 25 percent reduction in McMahon’s overall compensation.
The reduction, expected to save the district between $30,000 to $34,000 annually, comes from the district not having to contribute to McMahon’s retirement fund and is effective immediately.
‘I can take advantage of state regulations and the retirement system can consider me retired so the district doesn’t have to pay for my retirement anymore,? she explained. ‘It saves the district money without changing my contract. I am at an age where the state does not mandate that the district has to contribute to my retirement.?
The board approved a balanced budget at the June 18 meeting. Over the past few months as the board faced a $1.4 million budget deficit and struggled to make cuts, which included lay-offs of teachers, the need for sacrifice from all groups was emphasized.
‘I told all the groups they had to bring something to the table and Lorrie brought something to the table,? said Board President Kevin McClellan. ‘She did this to save the district money and she didn’t have to do that. This is a true savings to the school district.?
