Brandon’s Carter taking hoop skills to Marygrove College

Donald Carter will be going from a Blackhawk to a Mustang next season.
Carter, a senior at Brandon High School who helped contribute to the Blackhawks? Flint Metro League championship season, signed with Marygrove College for the 2006-07 season during a May 23 ceremony at Brandon High School.
Marygrove, based in Detroit with an enrollment of about 800 students, does not have any conference affiliation, but plays its games as party of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).
Dave Sichterman, athletic director/head men’s basketball coach at Marygrove, said Carter brings a lot to the table for the Mustangs, who went 11-21 during the 2005-06 season.
‘Definitely, he can contribute athleticism,? Sichterman said. ‘He’s very agile, so I think he can guard anyone from a one (point guard) to a four (power forward). I like his intensity on defense ? that’s what we were looking at this year with the freshmen we’re bringing in.?
Sichterman said Carter, who played forward for the Blackhawks, projects best as a small forward, although he is capable of guarding multiple positions.
‘Right now, being a small-college school, I think he definitely has the chance to compete and fight for minutes,? he said. ‘With him coming in, some of the older guys are going to have to fight and compete for their minutes.?
For his part, Carter, 18, said he believes the Marygrove program is a good fit for him.
‘They run an offense that I’m used to as far as the running game,? he said. ‘I feel I can help the team contribute to a championship.?
Carter was named to the second-team All-Flint Metro League squad in both the 2005-06 and 2004-05 seasons. He said he plans to study theater at Marygrove.
