Campaign season is officially underway in Independence Township as the filing date for office has passed.
Republican Dale Stuart is seeking his fourth term as Township Supervisor. Before serving as supervisor, Stuart served as a trustee for eight years and was also a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals.
Stuart is being opposed by current Trustee Dave Wagner. Wagner is finishing up his first term as township trustee.
There is no Democratic candidate for the position which pays $70,900 a year.
Three Republicans are attempting to replace Joan McCrary as township clerk. McCrary, who was re-elected to the position three times after being appointed to the position 16 years ago, and recently announced her retirement.
Republicans John Lutz, Timothy Sievers and Shelagh VanderVeen will face off in the August primary for the job which pays $63,300.
There are eight candidates for the four open Township Trustee positions. Joining incumbents Dan Kelly, Larry Rosso and Dan Travis are Charles Dunn, Michael Kohurt, Sam Moraco, Mel Vaara and J.C. Walker.
Trustees are paid $4,455 per year and $93 for every special meeting.
Current Treasurer Jim Wenger, who is seeking a third term as treasurer, is running unopposed.
The primary election is slated for Tuesday, Aug. 10.
