Carpenter Elementary’s Winter Intersession students were ‘Just Chillin? in the Arctic and Antarctica? in February.
Students enjoyed a week learning about life amongst the polar bears, walruses and penguins.
The Detroit Zoological Society visited and talked with the students about the animals and their habitats.
The kids were able to examine pelts, eggs, feathers, and other artifacts from polar bears, penguins and foxes for the students to touch.
Students also made igloos out of sugar cubes and marshmallows and some made Inuit soapstone carvings.
At the end of the week, students were treated to a day of ice skating at the Onyx Ice Rink and a fabulous Arctic and Antarctica display that included an igloo made out of over 500 milk cartons.
