Instead of hosting a tourney like the wrestling or hockey teams, the Wolves varsity volleyball team traveled to the Portage Northern Invitational on Dec. 18.
While Clarkston did not finish in the top ten, the Wolves did come home with their first two wins of the season, bringing their record to 2-5.
‘We are starting to move a little better defensively,? said Coach Kelly Avenall. ‘We have a good team. There are just times when we have mental breakdowns.?
During the tourney, the Wolves triumphed over Garber 25-2, 25-19 and Pawpaw 25-19, 25-17, before falling to Plainwell 25-19, 17-25, 10-15.
‘Instead of just being happy about hitting it over the net, (the team) is really starting to look for holes in the defense,? said Avenall. ‘And that’s one of the things we are going to be working more on over the break.?
Over the span of the tournament senior Stephanie Parkin had 30 kills, Kate Thomas led the Wolves with 57 assists and Kim Vincent served up 10 aces.
Earlier in the week, the Wolves lost to a very tough Lahser squad 25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 12-15. Parkison had 14 kills and Vincent recorded 6 aces.
Clarkston is off until Seaholm comes calling on Jan. 3.
