No matter if you are at a tournament, a practice, or whatever, you can do better.
That is what Monty Gallaher, boys’ varsity golf coach, tells his team every day.
The golf team is midway through their season, and Gallaher said, ‘We are playing okay, not poorly, but not great.?
However, the team is improving from last year. The boys scored a 328 in Traverse City — their best tournament score to date.
This year, the varsity team has two freshmen, a good number when looking towards the future, says Gallaher.
Freshman Alex Waelchli scored a 78 during OAA (Oakland Activities Association) Red League tournament, placing him in second overall.
Tyler Draggoo, Gallaher says, is another player to watch out for. He played on the varsity team last year as a freshman, and since improved his score by ten strokes, ending with a 79.
For now, the boys work on the fundamentals and simply keep practicing.
‘We just keep progressing,? said Gallaher, ‘Just get better every day.?
Instead of overcoming many negative points such as injuries like other teams, Gallaher presents a positive challenge to the boys: to improve.
The golf team looks forward to matches lined up within the next few weeks. Their season starts to pick up mid-May, when the district tournament begins.
‘To qualify for districts is our first goal,? said Gallaher.
From then, the team hopes to move on to regionals, where some of the best teams in the state will be competing.
