Dear Editor:
(In response to John Frazier’s letter, ‘Hunting a right’but not right,? The Citizen, Oct. 25, page 6):
In the 42 years that I have had the privilege to attend deer camp, some issues come to mind. Yes, there have been times I had to track a wounded deer farther than I would care to remember’preferring a quick humane kill. In a few deer camps, there may have been a racy magazine floating around. And at the end of the day after the guns are put away, there’s likely to be a beer tipped to go along with a poker game.
You see John, my theory of deer camp goes something like this: Deer camp is where men get to act like boys again if only for a short time and maybe not worry if some big-shot executive is stealing his 401K. And in turn, young boys learn to be men. They learn that you can laugh with a man and have a friend for life or if you laugh at him you could end up with an enemy. The same goes for making false and exaggerated statements about another man.
To paint hunters with a brush implying that they are bloodthirsty alcoholic whore mongers is just as unfair as to question your masculinity because you abhor hunting or that you got your girlfriend’s, wife’s or, better yet, mom’s OK before writing your view point. There, John, is my viewpoint in less than 250 words.
