Council inks village waste contract extension

Goodrich-The village council voted 4-0 Monday night to approve a four-year extension of the waste collection contract with Flint-based Republic Services of Michigan.
Councilmember Patricia Wartella was absent at the time of the vote.
The extension, which includes providing a 95-gallon or 65-gallon rolling trash cart for each of the approximately 650 village residents, will cost $10.15 per month’a drop in price from $10.34, or about 2 percent from the previous contract. The cost will then increase by 3 percent over the next three years of the contract, beginning in 2010.
Stephanie Glysson, director of governmental affairs for Republic Services of Michigan said the price drop was due to a change in the base of operation’the company recently switched from the Montrose area to Mundy Township, which is closer to the village.
Also, the use of the rolling trash containers will reduce the manpower needed to pick up the waste weekly from the residents, added Glysson. Each resident will receive the containers at their homes near the end of July.
‘We want everyone to try the carts for 30 days,? she said. ‘We’re positive they will like the carts. It’s going to change the esthetics in the community, these carts will reduce the amount of loose trash blowing around the neighborhoods.?
Atlas Township residents currently pay $8.22 per month for waste service, however, the contract does not include yard waste pickup.
