You are what you eat.
Mom tells us that when we’re kids.
Our doctor tells us this when we’re adults.
A group of second-graders from Daniel Axford Elementary were told this by Meijer Produce Clerk Alice Marsh as she gave them a fun tour of the Oxford store Tuesday.
During their field trip, the students learned all about the importance of eating healthy by following the food pyramid everyday and staying active by doing things like playing with their pets and riding bikes.
They also learned about Meijer’s NuVal System, which provides consumers comprehensive nutritional information by giving foods a rating between 1 and 100.
The higher the NuVal score, the better the nutrition. Nutrients that lead to high scores include fiber, various vitamins, zinc, calcium, iron, potassium and Omega 3 Fatty Acids.
Things that lead to a lower score include saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, sugar and cholesterol.
Foods that score 100 include asparagus, beans, blueberries, cauliflower, cranberries, green onions, lettuce (leaf, romaine), mushrooms, oranges and broccoli.
NuVal scores are located on shelf tags throughout the store, so customers can compare overall nutritional value the same way they compare prices.
At the end of the field trip, each student was given a bag containing a bottle of water, an apple and a bag of pretzels. Yummy!
