DPW position remains open

Ortonville- Despite a special meeting on Sept. 1 in which a new Department of Public Works Supervisor was expect to be named, the village remains without one.
Village Council President Sue Bess was joined by council members Mary Kassuba and Marcy Hanes in voting for current Brandon Township Recreation Director Fred Waybrant for the open DPW Supervisor position, but councilman Harold Batten voted no.
‘I felt they were rushing it too much,? Batten said. ‘They weren’t looking at the other candidates close enough. I wasn’t voting against Fred Waybrant, I just wanted to take a closer look at the others.?
Because the council did not have a quorum, the motion did not pass. Councilman Bob Flath and Councilwoman Kay Green were absent.
‘I was hoping to have a supervisor in place,? said Bess, adding that she was not happy.
Besides Waybrant, current DPW employee Dan Hackman has applied for the position of supervisor, as well as William Barger.
Waybrant, who has been recreation director for seven years, had no immediate comment on why he wants to leave his current position to become DPW supervisor.
