A Valentine’s dance at Oxford Middle School Feb. 18 resulted in a drug bust, reports of multiple illnesses and a rumor that someone had spiked the pop served to students.
An Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to the school after it was discovered that two students, ages 13 and 14, allegedly smuggled marijuana into the dance for seventh and eighth-graders.
OMS Principal Ken Weaver indicated marijuana was found in both the students? shoes, according to the sheriff’s report.
One student had enough marijuana for one joint, while the other had enough for half of a joint, the report stated. Petitions have been filed with the juvenile court.
Weaver sent out a Feb. 19 e-mail to parents explaining and clarifying what happened at the dance. In the e-mail, he addressed a rumor that someone had put alcohol in the students? soft drinks.
‘To date, no evidence has been found to suggest the pop was spiked by alcohol,? he wrote. Weaver noted the students were drinking ‘off brand? pop poured from newly-purchased two-liter bottles into individual cups.
The principal informed parents that the table from which the beverages were served was manned by student council members under the supervision of the council’s advisor and/or OMS staff.
It’s true that some students did get sick at the dance, which is what led to the rumor that the pop had been spiked. One student vomited, while two others reported feeling ill toward the end of the event.
‘Parents of the ‘known? ill students were contacted late last night and were found to be okay,? Weaver wrote. ‘One student was checked out at a hospital and is home with (their) parents.?
Weaver indicated school officials are waiting to receive more information about the cause of the illness. ‘The symptoms seemed to be related to illness or heat and excitement (from) the dance,? he wrote.
