The Community Educational Resource Center (CERC) hosted Empty Bowls: A Community Project to Fight Hunger on Nov. 2.
The public was invited to come and enjoy a bowl of chicken noodle soup, and take home a handmade ceramic bowl as a reminder that someone’s bowl is always empty. For a donation in the amount of their choice, participants helped alleviate someone’s hunger.
All funds raised from Empty Bowls goes to the Food Bank of Oakland County.
‘Empty bowls,? full hearts
To those in need, an empty bowl means no food, no money and in some cases, no hope.
To the TEAM 4-H Club, an empty bowl means the chance to fill stomachs, spread love and help others.TEAM 4-H stands for Together Everyone Achieves More.
Consisting of 16 members from Oxford, Orion and Oakland townships, TEAM 4-H is hosting this year’s ‘Empty Bowls? fund-rasier at Seymour Lake United Methodist Church Saturday, Dec. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m.
The event will feature the sale of approximately 200 ceramic bowls, hand-crafted and painted by 4-H club members from across Oakland County, according to Lake Orion resident Sue Meyer, general leader for TEAM 4-H.
With the purchase of each bowl, donors will be given a delicious bowl of soup and some bread to be enjoyed in the company of other generous souls.
Proceeds from the fund-raiser will benefit the Food Bank of Oakland County and its tireless efforts combating hunger county-wide.
TEAM 4-H shaped their bowls three weeks ago using some donated clay and spent part of Thursday afternoon painting them at Susan’s Ceramics Studio in downtown Oxford. The bowls were then fired in the ceramics studio’s kiln.
Oxford resident Taylor Fote, 11, who was elected president of TEAM 4-H last month, invites everyone to come to the ‘Empty Bowls? event and help feed the hungry and homeless.
‘It’s a fun evening out,? Meyer said. ‘We welcome the whole community to come out.?
Although TEAM 4-H is a general club that primarily follows the interests of its members ? archery, camping, art projects, etc. ? Meyer said community service has been a ‘consistent? theme for the club.
From a stocking-stuffer drive to sending dictionaries to a missionary school in South Africa to regularly visiting a small assisted living facility in Lake Orion, TEAM 4-H has ‘always had some sort of service project going,? Meyer said.
The Empty Bowls fund-raiser is at Seymour Lake United Methodist Church (3050 Sashabaw Road), located at the southwest corner of Sashabaw and Seymour Lake roads.
