In an attempt to keep income flowing for its post, the American Legion Chief Pontiac post 377, located near Lake Oakland, is attempting to sell a portion of its land to be developed into homes.
On July 5, The Independence Township Board authorized a first reading of the request to rezone 18 acres of the group’s land, purchased in 1955, from recreational to residential.
Past Commander Carnie Jackson, who has been involved with the American Legion for almost 16 years, said the group does not want the land to be developed.
‘It’s getting harder and harder to support the post,? Jackson said.
‘That (selling the land) should make us financially secure so we don’t ever have to sell.?
He added that the group was offered $7 million for the land. He said the legion would be selling eight lots that comprise 10 acres of property, while retaining 34 acres.
Jackson said there are 317 members at the post. Most are veterans of World War II.
He hopes to get more veterans from recent wars involved.
The group is open to any veteran who served in war even if some may not have seen time in battle.
