Goodrich Schools were closed on Dec. 17 due to a vague threat referring to “GHS” on Snapchat.
District Superintendent Wayne Wright said he received a call on Thursday, Dec. 16 from the Genesee County Sheriff Department that a threat was found from two former students Snapchats. The threat had been forwarded against “GHS.”
“We had no idea if that was Goodrich High School or Genesee High School or Georgia High School,” said Wright. “They were following Snapchats back to figure out where it came from—the threat was for Friday only.”
As of Thursday Dec.23, the number charged in Genesee County has risen to 22 students, including one in the Goodrich School District.
Each of the students were charged as juveniles with the crime of False Report or Threat of Terrorism which is a 20-year felony. Some of the students face additional charges including use of a computer to commit a crime, a 20-year felony, and intentional threat to commit an act of violence against a school, school employees or students, a misdemeanor.
Due to the escalation of school threats countywide in January, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton along with School Resource Officer Deputy Casey Seeley will visit Goodrich Schools to address all grade levels about the seriousness of the threats and what a responsible social media post or not.
On Jan. 12, 2022 the Goodrich School District will conduct an ALICE training refresher for all staff with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department. Students will be in for a half-day.
