Golfers handed a close loss by Fenton

The Oxford Wildcats Varsity Golf squad split this past week with a close loss to Lapeer West on Sept. 4 and a victory against Cranbrook on Sept 5.
Against Lapeer West, the Wildcats only lost by two strokes 161-163. Mike Morse shot a round of 39, while Scott Hyder and Bryan Mattack each shot 41 for the day.
On Friday, the Wildcats beat Cranbrook by a final score of 155-163, evening their record for the week. Oxford’s best rounds included Mike Morse (37), Gunnar Hemstrom (38), Aaron Bruce (40), and Bryan Mattack (40).
“We did not play badly in either of them, but we lost to Lapeer West, which puts us at 0-1 in the league standings,” says Coach Lovell, “We played very well against Cranbrook especially.”
The Wildcats are getting ready to compete in the Byron Invitational on Tuesday, which is an 18 team, 18-hole match held every year. While it is not counted in league standings, the Wildcats hope to play well in preparation for their upcoming dual-meets against Fenton and Holly.
The Cats will tee off against the Fenton Tigers at Tyrone Hills on Sept. 11 at 4:00 PM. The Wildcats will hope to even their league record, but Coach Lovell doesn’t think it will come easy.
“It will be tough, not only because it is not a home match for us, but they are just as good as we are, and we really need to come away with the win,” says Lovell, “It will all depend on who shoots what, and we’ll just have to see.”
