The varsity wrestling team had another good week of competition.
On Wednesday, Dec. 7, the squad took on Brighton in an anticipated rematch from last year.
Last year, Brighton handed Oxford their first loss of the season.
‘We didn’t compete with intensity last year against Brighton and we got beat. This year the team wanted to show Brighton how much better we are? coach Paul McDevitt stated.
Indeed they did, pounding the Bulldogs 62-12.
Winning their individual matches against Brighton were Calvin Cavanaugh, Mike Upshur, Bo Cantara, Kyle Brammer, Bobby Rhodes, Mike May, Cavan Cappuccilli-Cotter, Brent Mueller, Jay Regan, Nick Murray and Kam Mueller.
The team traveled to Romeo on Saturday for a tournament in which it finished in second place.
The Wildcats went 4-1 on the day defeating Warren Woods Tower 52-14, Saginaw 72-11, Birmingham Seaholm 66-15 and host Romeo 49-19 before losing in the finals to Richmond 27-39.
‘Richmond is a very good team. I would imagine they are contenders for the state championship in division 3. We have got some work ahead of us if we want to get to that level? added McDevitt.
Going undefeated on the day was junior Mike Upshur and senior Adam Duncan.
‘Duncan had a great day? praised McDevitt, ‘He improved his record to 6-1 for the season. Mike Upshur has been a huge part of our success so far. Currently he is undefeated at 8-0 with 7 pins.?
Going 4-1 on the day were freshman Calvin Cavanaugh, juniors Brent Mueller and Jay Regan, and senior Nick Murray.
The team competes in the prestigious Oakland County tournament this weekend held at Clarkston High School.
‘We are looking forward to the challenge of a 44 team tournament to find out how we stack up.? senior Kam Mueller said. ‘Of course our goal is to win it. If we give it our best, I think we have a shot.?
The Wildcats will have their work cut out for them as Oakland County boasts some of the states best teams such as Clarkston and Lake Orion.
The tournament is considered one of the largest of its kind in the nation.
The tournament, hosted by Clarkston starts on Friday at 3:30pm and continues Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
