Two area Lions Club members will be remembered in a unique way.
On Nov.10, Goodrich Lions Doug Smith and Glenn Thompson were honored with a ‘Welcome to Goodrich? sign and the beautifying of the flagpole area, both in front of the Lions Club building, on M-15 south of Green Road.
Both Smith and Thompson died earlier this year after many years of service to the community and the Goodrich Lions Club.
Smith served as club director, third, second and first vice-president and president. He was chairman of the Sight Committee for six years and a member of the Christmas tree committee.
‘The ‘Welcome to Goodrich? sign now welcomes visitors, not only to Goodrich, but also to the Goodrich Lions Club,? said Lions Club member Emery Bennett who coordinated the dedication.
The wooden sign was constructed by local Boy Scout Christian Stevenson as an Eagle Scout project. Attached to the welcome sign will be a Lions Club logo, Goodrich Chamber of Commerce, Goodrich United Methodist Church, The Pointe Church, Goodrich Masonic Lodge and Boy Scouts.
In addition to the welcome sign, decorative blocks are laid around the flag poles.
‘It’s only fitting for the Lions Club, because of his strong respect of God and country and being a World War II veteran,? said Bennett.
Thompson was the Superintendent of the New York State School for the Blind and was a past member of the Lions Club in both Batavia and Akron, New York before joining the Goodrich club. He was chairman of the White Cane sales and Christmas basket committee. Goodrich Lion Shawn Smith installed the decorative blocks that surround the flag poles.
