A Groveland Township man will be honored on May 18 for his efforts in saving the life of a retired Oakland Sheriff Deputy last fall.
According to news reports, at 1:45 p.m., Oct. 8, Groveland Township resident Ed Hook stopped his vehicle near the intersection of Grange Hall Road and Dixie Highway. Retired Deputy Keith Palmer was heading northbound on Dixie Highway on his motorcycle and had stopped at a traffic light at the intersection.
A 22-year-old woman from Grand Blanc, had fallen asleep at the wheel and drifted into the other northbound lane and sideswiped Palmer on his motorcycle, striking his leg.
Hook exited his vehicle and wrapped a belt around Palmer’s leg to act as a tourniquet to halt the bleeding.
Emergency medics from nearby Groveland Township Fire Station #1 arrived and transported Palmer to Genesys Medical Center where his leg was amputated below the knee.
Michigan State Troopers said alcohol was not involved.
The accident occurred the same day as Palmer’s final day on the job celebrating his 28 years at the sheriff department where he had been assigned to the Oakland County Circuit Court detention area.
‘Hook was on the scene and got involved,? said Sheriff Michael Bouchard, who presented the Citizen’s Award.
