The Lake Orion Varsity Hockey team defeated Marquette on Wednesday, Feb. 9 by the score of 3-2.
Marquette was the sixth ranked team in the state.
Marquette opened the scoring in the first period on a power play goal right in front of the goal crease.
In the second period the Dragons tied the game when Brent Cotter passed low to Daniel Chappie behind the net and he found Brad Bogus who buried it to open the Orion scoring. Dylan Rosen ripped a slap shot over the net and the rebound bounced out to Andrew Vanek who found a small opening to put the green and white in the lead.
Marquette tied it up in the third when a wrist shot from the point’took a fortuitous bounce into the net. The winning goal came when Danny Blascak skated in on the net and took a shot. Shane Stockwell’grabbed the rebound and slammed it home to complete the scoring.
The Dragons out shot Marquette 29-22 and Shawn Horton made some key saves to give the squad a chance to win.
The Lake Orion Varsity Hockey Team played again on Saturday, Feb 12, defeating Bloomfield United by a score of 3-2 at the Michigan Public High School Showcase.
After defeating Marquette on Thursday, the Dragons came out flatter than a pancake and found themselves down 2-0 mid-way through the game.
The seniors stepped up and fought their way back to force overtime. Corbin Rainey found Jesse Cameron open in front of the net and he lit the lamp for the first goal.
In the third period, Danny Blascak passed low to Brett Reed who fed a hard pass to a wide open Jesse Cameron who buried his second goal of the game.
Neither team could score again and the game went into a five minute overtime period. After winning a battle along the boards, Brett Reed passed over to Jesse Cameron then over to Corbin Rainey who was charging the net and managed to beat the goal tender’to end the game.
The Dragons will play again on Saturday, Feb. 26 in the OAA Finals.

On Thursday, Feb. 3, the Dragons defeated the Marysville Vikings 8-1.
Marysville lead 1-0 on a power play goal early in the game. Jesse Cameron tied it up with assists going to Daniel Chappie and Brad Bogus.
The Dragons scored three times in the second period. Zach Koonce started the scoring with a bar down shot after receiving passes from Chappie and Nick Balavich. Corbin Rainey intercepted a pass on a penalty kill play and fed a pass to Brett Reed who broke down on the goalie, stickhandled to the center of the ice and buried the shot. Dylan Rosen fed a pass to Danny Blascak who ripped a slap shot that Chappie tipped to end the second period scoring.
In the third period Koonce, Jake Kruetizer and Brad Bogus (2 goals) all lit the lamp to complete the game.
The Dragons defeated the Romeo Bulldogs 4-2 on Saturday, Feb. 5.
Nick Balavich found Shane Stockwell who started the scoring. Jake Kruetizer let a shot go from the top of the circle that Balavich tipped to open a two goal lead. Romeo scored off a face off and the period ended.
Corbin Rainey made it 3-1 with assists from to Chappie and Bogus.
Romeo scored on a power-play in the third, but Tony Johnson passed back to the point and Calvin Johnson ended the scoring with a bar down wrist shot.
The Dragons will play in Chelsea on Wednesday, Feb. 9, against Canton, and Thursday, Feb. 10 against Marquette also in Chelsea.

Lake Orion High School’s Boy’s Hockey team fell to Clarkston on Saturday, Jan. 29 with a final score of 5-2.
The first period saw the Dragons outshoot the Wolves 10 to 5, but the score remained 1-1, with the Dragon’s first goal shot by Corbin Rainey, assisted by Shane Stockwell and Brett Reed.
The second period was not as balanced, and the Wolves managed to score three times on nine shots. The Dragons again outshot the Wolves 12 to 9, but the Wolves stopped every one.
The third period began with a number of dominating plays by the Dragons. Daniel Chapple assisted Stockwell in scoring the second goal of the game for the Dragons. Yet despite having a great deal of momentum in the final period, they failed to score again.
The Dragons shot 38 times, but the Wolves capitalized on their attempts, scoring five times on 17 shots.
The next game will be Thursday, Feb. 3, against Marysville at the Detroit Skate Club in Bloomfield Hills.

Saturday, Dec. 18, the Dragon hockey squad defeated Troy Athens, 7-0.
The first and winning goal was scored off the’opening face-off.’Jesse Cameron took the puck through the middle of the ice splitting two defenseman then passed low to Zach Koonce. Koonce stick handled, drew the goalie to the glove side then slid a pass to a wide open Nick Balavich, who calmly buried the shot in the back of the net.
Later in the’first period’Brent Cotter drilled a high’slap shot’on the goalie who gave up a big rebound to Koonce, who buried the shot ending the period at 2-0.
The second period rained Dragon goals as Koonce, Balavich, Danny Blascak, Calvin Vaughn and Cameron all found the back of the net. Other Dragons drawing assists were Jake Kruetizer, Dylan Rosen,’Brett Reed’and Shane Stockwell.
The team does not play again until after’Christmas’in St. Clair Shores.

The Dragons soundly defeating the Stoney Creek Cougars, 8-3. Justin McKelvey started the scoring with an unassisted goal in the first, picking up his own rebound and stuffing it in the back of the net.
The second period brought a barrage of goals from both teams with Jesse Cameron scoring a hat trick and Corbin Rainey netting his first goal after returning from the football team. Stoney Creek also scored three that period, leaving the game at 5-3 after two periods.
The Dragons finished the third period with two goals from Daniel Chapie and a goal from Brett Reed.
The shot count for the game was 53 – 13 for the green and white.
The boys in green took on Birmingham United, Saturday, Dec. 11, ultimately being passed up in the third period and narrowly losing 5-4.
The team got off to a’one goal lead after a period on a Zach Koonce goal, with assists coming from Nick Balavich and Andrew Vanek.
In the second period a number of penalties killed the momentum for the team and Birmingham capitalized by scoring three. Koonce scored another goal assisted by Balavich to bring the team back to within one.
In the’third period’the Dragons had a great deal of momentum after a pass behind the net from’Reed’found’Brent Cotter who beat the goalie short side. Birmingham answered twice to bring the lead back to two goals.?
Reed took a pass from Chappie and brought the team within one. The Dragons had a number of shots and good scoring chances after this point but could not overcome the Birmingham squad.
The team is off until next Saturday when they take on Troy Athens at the Troy Sports Centre. Please note the game previously scheduled for Dec. 16 has been moved to February in the’Michigan’Public High School Showcase.
