Huntoon Funeral Home

Huntoon Funeral Home, Inc., located at 47 N. Washington St. in downtown Oxford, is growing to meet the continually changing needs of the Oxford/Orion area.
The Huntoon family plans on breaking ground this summer on a 10,000-square-foot addition to the north side of their Victorian-style Oxford Chapel.
‘We will be keeping with the Victorian theme that runs through the home and through the village,? said owner Bill Huntoon. ‘The addition will include new viewing rooms, a children’s room and a lounge.?
The expansion will be two-stories with the main floor at ground level and equipped with an elevator to provide full handicap access to all areas of the funeral home. In addition, the parking lot will be enlarged to add an additional 60 parking spaces.
‘This will allow us to accommodate up to four viewings at one time,? explained Huntoon. ‘Basically, we are providing more room for the families we serve.?
The children’s room will be stocked for entertainment and the lounge will offer coffee, other beverages and a microwave.
The origins of the Huntoon Funeral Home go back to the early 1900s in Pontiac. In 1909, Orrin P. Huntoon, Sr. entered into apprenticeship under Elbert J. Kelly. By 1911, Mr. Huntoon had become a full partner with Mr. Kelly. The 1912 Pontiac City directory lists the firm of Kelly & Huntoon doing business on N. Saginaw St.
In 1913, Kelly left the funeral home, and Orrin Huntoon Sr. moved the business to Perry and School Street in Pontiac. He again moved the business when he purchased a large home on Oakland Avenue in 1926. The family built additions to the property in the 1920s and 1960s.
In the mid-1970s, the Huntoons began to look for a location outside of Pontiac. In 1978, the family purchased the Flumerfelt Funeral Home in Oxford. The previous owner John Flumerfelt had apprenticed with the Huntoons.
The Oxford Chapel was once the home of Doctor Bachelor and has always been a beautiful landmark in the Oxford area with its ‘gingerbread? design.
In 1986, the Huntoon family acquired their third funeral home on West Huron Street in Pontiac. It is the only building in the city specifically designed to perform as a funeral home from the ground up.
Today, Huntoon Funeral Home, Inc. is one of the oldest funeral firms in Oakland County. The third-generation family business is owned by funeral directors William V. and Robert C. Huntoon.
As a full service funeral home, Huntoon’s offers pre-need arrangements and personalized funerals and memorials. Families can bring in pictures, artwork, personal belongings, special music or any other items that help tell and celebrate the life story of a loved one.
Cremation services are also available. Huntoon Funeral Home offers rental caskets and a variety of innovative options for cremations.
In addition, Huntoon Funeral Home offers markers and monuments from the Raubar Granite Company. A wide-selection of various styles is available, and customizing can be done.
‘We are a full service funeral home, whether it be pre-need, at-need, cremation or markers,? said Huntoon.
