All 351 second-graders in the Oxford school district got free helmets this week courtesy of United HealthCare Community Plan, Priority Health, McLaren Oakland and the Oxford Fire Department.
The kids learned the importance of wearing a helmet while riding their bicycles, scooters and skateboards or wheeling around town on their roller-skates or roller-blades.
They also learned that a lot of pretty ‘cool? people wear helmets such as motorcyclists, firefighters and football players.
Once they got fitted for a brand new helmet by Oxford firefighters, the kids enjoyed hugging and high-fiving Dr. Health E. Hound, who serves as a mascot for United HealthCare.
