Capturing that special moment on film takes skill, talent, experience and an artist’s eye. All four of those qualities can be found at downtown Oxford’s Johnston Photography, owned and operated by Dorothy and Don Johnston, an Oxford resident for the last 11 years.
Johnston opened her studio in April 2003 after purchasing the building from local legend Mel Pawl when he decided to retire after decades of photographing Oxford’s kids and families.
From high school seniors and babies to families and pets to capturing your wedding day on film, Johnston Photography does a wide range of portrait work, continuing Pawl’s tradition of high quality service. Johnston prides herself on the uniqueness of her photos and the variety she offers customers.
‘It’s not cookie-cutter stuff,? she said.
Whether Johnston’s shooting on location in a park or backyard or using one of her many eye-catching sets to create that perfect in-studio portrait, you can be assured she’s tailoring the whole experience to the individual’s wants and needs.
For instance, ‘some people want photos of just their baby’s feet and hands.?
However, the bulk of Johnston’s business comes from doing high school senior portraits. Last year she snapped about 200 high school seniors from Oxford, Orion, Brandon, Holly, Clarkston, Lapeer, Romeo and even as far way as Troy.
A few years ago, Johnston’s high school senior portfolios won her two blue ribbons and a national third place award at the Senior Photography International Convention in Tampa, Florida.
‘It was such an honor for me,? said Johnston, who’s been a professional photographer since 1990 when she started shooting commercial work.
As a special for Easter, Johnston Photography is offering customers the opportunity from March 21 to 25 to have their children’s pictures taken with some adorable yellow and black baby chicks.
What could be cuter? Little kids playing with baby chicks. Giggling as their chins are tickled by soft little feathers. Parents can have their kids photographed with the chicks for only $20 ? prints are extra.
Johnston Photography is also promoting a exclusive special for Oxford High School seniors only this summer. She’s offering a photo session rate of $20.07 (for the Class of 2007) and it’s open for any date this summer.
‘They get first dibs on session times and dates,? Johnston said. For that $20.07 photo session they’re entitled to unlimited outfit changes and poses ? whatever can be done with the 1? hour period. ‘They also get two free movie cards good for either a movie, popcorn and soda at the Oxford 7 Theater. Whatever they want.?
To take advantage of this deal, members of the OHS Class of 2007 are encouraged to call between April 11 and 15.
When the time comes to frame that special student, family or wedding portrait, Johnston Photography can handle that aspect too with a wide variety of custom frames and mats to fit just about any size photo. ‘From photo to frame, we’re full service here,? Johnston said.
Johnston Photography is located at 8 N. Washington St. in downtown Oxford. Beginning in April, the studio’s open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more info call (248) 628-6391 or visit www.johnstonphotography.net.
