Janee? Jones helped the Goodrich girls track team make a strong stand against a bunch of larger schools at the Mott Relays May 10.
The Martians finished in fifth place with 61 points. Goodrich was one of only two schools not in Class A among the 15 teams competing at the invite.
Jones took first place in the 1,600 meter race (5:23.9) and teamed with Kate Maciag, Samantha Minkler and Kristen Poulos to win the 6,400 meter relay (23:45). Minkler also took sixth in the 1,600 (6:02.3), while the 3,200 meter relay team finished third (10:11.7).
‘We dominated the distance events,? Goodrich coach John Shaw said.
In field events, Goodrich’s Jacqui Cornwell won the discus (101?8?), while teammate Betsy Schumacher finished third in that event (93?1?). Schumacher also finished fifth in the shot put (31?7?).
At a home meet two days earlier, the Martians split the difference with their two opponents, defeating Bentley, 87-1/2 to 48-1/2 while narrowly losing to New Lothrop, 71-66.
Jones was once again a force to be reckoned with, as she won two events and was part of a winning relay team. Her two individual wins came in the 1600 (5:26.7) and the 400 (1:04.3), and she teamed with Jill Zirnhelt, Minkler and Poulos to win the 3,200 relay (10:07.5).
