Three more awards were recently added to the Oxford Leader’s trophy room as part of the Michigan Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest.
Congratulations to Staff Writer Andrew Moser for winning second place in the sports writing category for his Jan. 26, 2011 story ‘Investor’s green to yield blue turf.?
This was Moser’s very first award as a professional journalist.
Editor C.J. Carnacchio won two awards for his photography skills.
In the picture story category, Carnacchio took second place for a photo page he created entitled ‘Share the world.? The page depicted photos from Oxford Elementary School’s international day held in June 2010.
For an entire day, the school was transformed into a smorgasbord of international foods, customs, music, activities and exotic animals as part of the school district’s emphasis on providing a global education.
‘The individual photos all show great composition,? the judges wrote. ‘I especially liked the one of the sloth hanging (shown right) in the foreground as the children sit in the background. Some great shots added up to a fun and visually interesting picture story.?
Carnacchio also took third place in the news picture category for a photo he took of workers cutting down a 150-year-old silver maple tree on Park St. in Oxford Village.
‘I like how the big tree is the focus, but the chain saw man’s face is fully visible, as is his chain saw,? the judges wrote. ‘It’s good to show faces, and this action shot shows just how big that tree was.?
Since joining the Leader in May 1999, Carnacchio has now won a grand total of 52 regional, state and national awards for his writing and photography skills.
