On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Lake Orion high school varsity dance team competed at the 18th Annual Pistons Palace Classic Pom/Dance Championships at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
Eighty teams from all over the state of Michigan competed in the all-day event.
Performing the last routine of the day, the varsity dance team wowed the judges and was awarded fifth place in their category.
The self-funded team normally practices five hours per week and performs at various varsity sporting events as well as at numerous competitions throughout the season.
In preparation for Saturday’s competition the team put in many extra hours of practice.
‘I am very proud of my hardworking team. Everyone has been trying their hardest and their work is paying off.? said Coach Lindsay Sutter.
Sutter is an Oakland University student and dance team member there. She brings years of experience to the team.
Along with performing at games and competing, the team puts on annual clinics for elementary through high school students who are interested in joining the team. The clinics are followed by an evening show where clinic participants perform for their parents and friends.
The dance team showcases their talents during the show by choreographing and performing their own routines.
Information on the clinics/show will be posted on the Lake Orion Community Schools website as the dates get nearer.
Team members include Devon Fasbinder (captain), Katie Hadrian (co-captain), Stefany Banda, Kaitlyn Hizelberger, Sarah Swietlik, Jordan Stewart, Dara Grenon, Mackenzie Snyder, Courtney Travis, Ashlee Krystek, Cristi Fisher and Shannon Gronevelt.
