Linden — On Oct. 15, GHS Sr. #3 Gavin Hart connected on two touchdown passes to GHS Soph. #9 Max Macklem as the Martians delivered a shutout victory over Linden 21-0 and returned home with their first ever Flint Metro League championship.
GHS Jr. # 2 Easton Phipps also scored for the Martians, who are now 7-1 heading into the final game of the season.
“We’re excited about the Flint Metro League title,” said Head Coach Tom Alward, who is now 177-110 with the Martians winning league titles in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2019 and now 2022.
“The Linden win was the grittiest performance I’ve ever seen. We have a laundry list of injuries and this team stayed on the field,” said Alward.
“We held a very good Linden team to just 25 yards of offense and shut them out for eight quarters. Our defense stepped up.”
The Martians defeated Linden on Sept. 1, at Goodrich 6-0. The only loss this season was to Frankenmuth in August.
