Martians to win in opener

Goodrich’s baseball team was not about to squander an opportunity to make a good first impression.
The Martians broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on their way to a 10-3 win against Vassar in their April 5 opener.
The game was the first of a scheduled doubleheader between the two teams, but the second game was called because of darkness.
Goodrich scored one run in the third inning and two more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead, but Vassar made their fifth-inning comeback.
However, the Martians? offense displayed plenty of firepower in making their comeback, pounding out 14 hits in the game. Renny Grant led the Martians by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Kirk Elsworth went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI.
Adam Compeau and Weston Coleman each went 2-for-3 for the Martians.
Coach Bob Foreback used four pitchers during the game. Starter Nick Wesener went the first two innings, allowing two hits and three walks, while striking out four.
Basil Wilson relieved Wesener and also went two innings, not allowing a hit or walk in the process. Compeau took over in the fifth inning and allowed all three Vassar runs, as well as two walks and two hits, striking out two.
Matt Hughes went the final inning for the Martians, allowing a hit and a run while striking out one.
