Motivated, productive library staff

Dear Editor:
(In response to ‘Ghosts of Brandon Township Library,? The Citizen, Jan. 17, page 6):
I will refrain from commenting on or speculating about the motives of the letter writer, Mr. Bill Kissel. Others who have used the library can judge for themselves the fairness and accuracy of Kissel’s assertions and the cogency of his argument.
What I will do is state that my experience with our library’and that of other township citizens with whom I have discussed this’is completely at the other end of the spectrum. I have spent many hours at the library and have never observed any employee standing idle, not for a single moment. To the contrary, library staff and the unpaid volunteers have always been courteous, capable, and energetically occupied.
Kissel makes an important point in his last paragraph raising the issue of priorities: ‘at a time when some of our neighbors are making difficult choices between food, medicine, and property taxes.? There are those of us who would include education as a high priority. There are those of us who appreciate the schools, roads, and libraries that were provided for us by previous generations. Certainly we want our tax money spent wisely. At the same time we accept the responsibility and honor of doing our part to sustain these resources and services to meet today’s needs and to provide for our children and grandchildren.
Especially in demanding times such as these, a community’s library is a resource that is vital to the well-being of its citizens. We are fortunate indeed to have an outstanding facility and a highly capable, motivated, and productive staff in the Brandon Township Library.
