Dear Editor,
(In response to: ‘Sharing of the green? The Citizen, Feb. 21, page 1):
The Ortonville Community Emergency Fund’s Sharin? o? the Green matching fund drive is an over the top success! Thanks to everyone who contributed toward doubling the $2,000 anonymous donation. Twenty-one first time donors, local businesses, churches, and individuals all contributed money to assure that the food pantry will be able to serve our community for the next two months and money is still being counted.
A heartbreaking number of pantries are looking at empty shelves, but you are making it possible for OCEF to serve families in the Brandon School District with food, cleaning supplies, and personal need items. While some things must be purchased commercially, as much as possible is bought from Gleaners (formerly the Food Bank of Oakland County), which can provide food for three meals at a cost of $1. A large family receives the equivalent of $69 worth of groceries (a week’s worth) for a much lower amount because of access to Gleaners. The families also get a food card for fresh items at local stores.
One-hundred sixty-six families have already registered for the OCEF Easter distribution and the total number is expected to be 185. The distribution will take place on Sunday, April 5 and Monday, April 6 at Saint Anne. For information call Judy at 248-627-3965 ext. 103.
Thanks to all. Caring, compassion, and action are truly hallmarks of this community.
Sue Howard, President
of OCEF Board
