National Pet Adoption Month

Bot is a 10-week-old black kitten with one eye, looking for a home and people to love her.
The kitten will be available for adoption this weekend, as well as many other animals, at Pet Supplies ‘Plus,? 22 N. Ortonville Road as the store celebrates National Pet Adoption Month.
Bot had to have surgery to remove her eye. She is just one of numerous animals that are in need of a home after being surrendered, abandoned, neglected, or discovered as strays around the area.
‘They come from all over,? said Linda Carmean of the Devoted Friends Animal Society, an Ortonville-based rescue that will have Bot and approximately 20 other kittens available for adoption from 1-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 20, at Pet Supplies ‘Plus.? ‘We found one cat under Bullfrog’s with three kittens. Three other cats and their kittens were going to be euthanized if we didn’t get them from animal control. Mostly, we have kitties born outside and unwanted. We found four in a barn and another mom and her kittens were dropped off in front of our vet’s office.?
Devoted Friends is devoted to finding loving homes for cats as well as for dogs, working with numerous foster volunteers until permanent homes can be found. The non-profit 501c3 organization relies on donations and volunteers to continue to help the animals. Donations are used to give age-appropriate vaccinations, veterinary care such as Bot’s surgery and sterilization for animals, as well as for food and other supplies.
‘It’s a little slower this year for adoptions,? said Carmean. ‘There is always a need.?
Martha Ford, a volunteer with PAWS Animal Rescue, based out of Swartz Creek, will have dogs and puppies available at Pet Supplies ‘Plus? from noon-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 19.
‘We have at least 35 dogs available for adoption,? said Ford. ‘They are from owner surrender, abandoned, strays, a lot of neglect cases. A lot of times, people can’t afford to care for them anymore, they’re not working out in the family, or they get tired of them when they’re not cute little puppies anymore… We have many animals in foster homes to get training. Our goal is to save more lives. We do know temperament for each animal and which animal will fit with which family. We will help you find the right one for your family.?
As part of the weekend’s events, Pet Supplies ‘Plus? will offer a $10 coupon to be used for any purchase of $50 or more with the adoption of an animal needing a home.
Throughout the entire month of October, Pet Supplies Plus locations will continue support for their local animal rescue organization by offering shoppers the chance to donate at checkout for the chain’s annual October Donation Drive. Patrons will have the opportunity to support their local rescue agency by donating funds via cash, credit or debit card.
