New deal inked with sheriff’s department

Atlas Twp.-The township board approved a one-year, $476,700 contract with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department for police protection at Monday’s board of trustees meeting.
The amount reflects a 9 percent increase over the 2007-08 contract and includes a 4 percent pay hike for deputies and a 2.5 percent post-retirement fee. Per terms of the deal, presented by Capt. Chris Swanson of the GCSD, coverage includes four deputies and 24-hour service for both Goodrich and the township. The township established a contract with the GCSD about 13 years ago which is funded by 1 mill from area property owners.
The millage was increased in 2005 by a special assessment of $50 for every improved lot and $25 for unimproved lots.
