The annual Ortonville Veterans Day observance has been moved to Pontiac.
On Nov. 11, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 582 will be participating in ceremonies at Perrymount Cemetery in Pontiac. The annual observance of Veterans Day is conducted by the Oakland County Veterans Group and involves all veterans organizations from across Oakland County. The site for the ceremony is on an old burial ground for deceased veterans and war dead which had been neglected for many years but was rediscovered a few years ago and rehabilitated by volunteers from veterans? organizations around Pontiac.
The observance of Veterans Day goes back to World War I. Originally called Armistice Day to mark the end of that war on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, it was renamed Veterans Day in the 1950s and designated by President Eisenhower to honor all men and women who had served our country in the armed forces.
Perrymount Cemetery is located near Perry and Montcalm streets in Pontiac. The ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m., the time the cease-fire went into effect at the end of World War I. The public is cordially invited to attend. Parking is available on the cemetery grounds.
