Sometimes the schedule makers just get lucky.
When the schedule was created for the Flint Metro League wrestling competitions who would have thought that the very last meet of the season would pit the two undefeated teams against each other in a showdown for first place?
For the fans of FML wrestling that is exactly what they got. Oxford enters tonight’s meet a perfect 6-0 in the league to face rival Linden who also boasts a perfect 6-0 record. The winner will claim the dual meet portion of the league championship.
The Wildcats did their part in setting the stage for this showdown by downing Fenton 63-8 and outlasting defending FML champ Holly 36-22 last Wednesday at Holly.
Although Oxford had little trouble dismantling Fenton, winning 12 of the 14 weight classes, Holly was a different story. Holly took the lead out of the gate when sophomore Kyle Brammer dropped a decision 5-0.
The Wildcats then won the next two in a row as Mike May and Mike Myer each won decisions making the score 6-3 in Oxfords favor. Holly then reeled off 3 straight wins, two by major decision to take a 14-6 lead.
Oxford answered with three straight wins of their own as Zach Line, John Logan and Nick Murray all won by pin or technical fall to give Oxford a 22-14 advantage. Holly won the next two to even the score at 22 a piece.
However, that was all Holly had left in the tank as Oxford won the last three matches to win the dual 36-22. Mike Upshur, Nathan Musgrove and Bobby Rhodes were the last three nails in the Broncho’s coffin.
Winning against Fenton were, Bobby Rhodes, Kyle Brammer, Mike May, Brent Mueller, Josh Villareal, Zach Line, John Logan, Nick Murray, Adam Duncan, Aaron Wroblewski, Mike Upshur and Bo Cantara.
The Wildcats also went 3-1 on the day Saturday at the Oxford Duals. Oxford defeated state ranked Flint Powers 40-30, Troy 49-24, and Croswell-Lexington 63-11 before coming up short against state ranked New Lothrop 26-40.
The loss was the team’s first defeat since December 10 and only their third of the season. The Wildcats are now 20-3 overall.
The showdown with Linden will take place Wednesday, February 8 at Lapeer West High School. The action is slated to begin at 6pm.
