Red Cross honors heroes

Goodrich – The Red Cross recently honored four men for saving a Hadley Township woman trapped beneath icy waters last year.
Christopher Tanner and Genesee County Sheriff’s Sgt. Dave McDonald, both of Goodrich, joined Lapeer County resident Raymond Hile and Jery Scheddel of Macomb, Mich. in freeing Elizabeth Adams from her vehicle, which flipped into a Hegel Road pond Jan. 17, 2004.
The doors to the car , which was submerged upside down, would not open until the four men risked falling through the ice to break her free.
Capt. Chris Swanson nominated the four for their heroic efforts.
‘Any time a regular citizen and the police work together to save a life, it’s worth recognizing,? said Swanson, who isn’t surprised one of his officers was part of the effort.
‘We work for God. He protects us in situations that endanger our lives, and when it’s time to come home, He calls us, so we don’t even think about it,? said Swanson, paraphrasing a New York detective.
Adams had the chance to personally thank her four rescuers at the May 13 ceremony, held at Flint’s Holiday Inn Gateway Center.
‘They’re all my heroes,? she said in a 2004 article.
