Responsibility at the local level

Dear Editor:
(In response to, ‘Township retains current deputies’for now,? The Citizen, Nov. 21, page 1)
Maybe I’ve read this issue of The Citizen wrong. On the first page, it talks about laying off a police officer because of lack of money in the budget. A few pages in it talks about moving forward on a park project, even though there is not enough money in the budget.
I agree that a lighted sledding hill with a lift station would be an incredible thing to have. Especially with the slow economic times, it’d be nice for us all to have a fun, free thing to do. However, the article also states that if the project is dropped it would save the township $20,000, instead of being in debt.
Isn’t this the mentality that has gotten this country in the trouble it’s in? Shouldn’t the government be the leaders in showing people that we need to stop spending money we don’t have? Cut out the extras and stick with the basics until things turn around? Oh, that’s right we can just print more money, and borrow more from China.
I also have my doubts that grants will no longer be given because one project was cancelled due to hard economic times. Maybe, just maybe, responsibility can start here at the local level.
