Camp Fire USA North Oakland Council is once again raising money for the summer camp program.
The organization is planning its 13th annual 5K run on Saturday, May 17, to help raise funds to send low-income children to their summer camp.
‘We have about 100 kids per week at the camp. The first three weeks are boys and girls from first grade to sixth grade while the last week is a Pee-Wee camp with four and five-year-olds.
‘It is a physically and emotionally safe camp,? social worker and camp employee Beverly French said. ‘It is a real fun camp. Everybody has a great time.?
The run will take place at Independence Oaks County Park.
‘We had around 100 people run last year,? Margie Wiliams. ‘It really depends on the weather. We were not very fortunate last year. We are hoping it warms up.?
Participants will be eligible to win hotel overnights, meal and gift certificates. Runner awards will be given to the overall male and female runners and the first two places in each of the 11 age divisions.
Registration fee is $18 per participant if registered before May 2 and $20 after May 2. Group and family rates are available. The run will begin at 9 a.m. For additional information or to receive a registration form, call (248) 618-9050.
Camp Fire USA was founded in 1910 and serves boys and girls with various programs including the Campfire Program and community outreach programs.
‘Every non-profit agency is feeling the pinch,? French said. ‘Our donations are down and the number of families needing help has increased. We have never had so many requests. There is such a need.?
