The varsity volleyball team had to rebound from a heartbreaking loss Jan. 16 against Lapeer West.
At Fenton on Thursday, the Ladycats defeated Fenton in four games to add another win to their record.
Oxford put together one of their best games in the season so far, following the leads of their outstanding hitting and relentless defense.
Oxford defeated the Tigers 25-23 and 25-18 before dropping the third game 25-27. The Ladycats regrouped and were able to down Fenton in the fourth game 29-27.
‘Was it close?? Oxford head coach Kristi McDevitt said. ‘Yeah, a little bit too close, but I am pleased that the girls prevailed and didn’t give up.?
Senior captain Shana Jones was unstoppable on the left side of the net, finishing the night with most kills at 16.
Senior captain Mykala Salquist was a force at the net as well with three blocks and 11 kills, and junior Danielle Wicker also finished with 11 kills.
Coach McDevitt was very pleased with the rest of her offense, with each hitter posting a high number of kills.
Junior Kaitlin DuCharme had 8 kills, while junior captain Liz Hazelwood and sophomore Karlyn Stroope each had 6 kills. The win improved Oxford’s record to 3-2 in the FML and 14-7-2 overall.
On Monday, the Ladycats faced off with the Linden Eagles. Oxford finished match in three games for the victory with scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-19. Senior Courtney Wright stepped up with 9 kills, 5 blocks, and 3 aces.
Jones continued her consistent play with 6 kills, and senior Ashley Seeling finished with five kills. Oxford travels to Ortonville on Thursday to take on the Brandon BlackHawks.
The Ladycats are now 4-2 in the FML and 15-7-4 overall.
Freshman Volleyball
Oxford’s freshmen volleyball team continued their winning streak Jan. 16 by defeating the Lapeer West Panthers 25-18 and 25-11. Hannah George was a powerhouse for her team by serving 16 points during the match. Katherine Bosetti led her team in passing with 90% of her passes on target.
On Thursday, Jan. 19, the freshmen team earned their fifth straight win against the Fenton Tigers. The team lost the first match and came from behind to win the second and third games with scores of 25-16 and 25-23. Hannah George and Kim Sutphin served a combined total of 16 of their teams points for the night with a combined total of six aces. Leessa Collier had an amazing night at the net with 90% good hits and five kills.
On Monday, the freshmen spikers defeated Linden in three straight games with scores of 25-5, 25-14 and 25-17. That was the team’s sixth straight Flint Metro League win. Leessa Collier, Anna Moses and Hannah George had a great night, hitting the net with a combined total of 21 kills. Katherine Bosetti and Kirstie Day both had 100 percent on target passes for the neight.
The team is now 6-0 in the FML.
