The varsity volleyball team was back in action this weekend after the long holiday break.
The Ladycats traveled to Class B state powerhouse Marysville, to compete in the Vikings? annual tournament last Saturday.
Oxford started out well in the tourney, defeating the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats in their first match of the day 25-19 and 25-21.
Senior captain Shana Jones had six kills while senior Courtney Wright had six blocks. In the second match, Oxford matched up with Grand Blanc and defeated them 25-16 and 25-21.
Senior captain Mykala Salquist had the most kills with seven, and also was a force at the net with four blocks.
Against Marysville, Oxford came out sluggish and never came close to a recovery as the Vikings handily defeated Oxford 8-25 and 9-25.
Oxford came out of their pool in second place behind Marysville and was seeded against Lapeer East.
Oxford was defeated in the first game 20-25, but came back in the second match, 25-18, to force a third match against the Eagles.
The Ladycats waited too long in the match, which only goes to 15, to even put up a fight and lost the match 8-15.
The loss resulted in Oxford’s elimination in the tournament. Shana Jones had 14 kills and junior setter Liz Hazelwood had 30 assists. Oxford ended the day 2-2, improving their overall record to 8-4-2.
League action kicked off this week for the Ladycats, who traveled to Holly to take on both the Bronchos and the Lapeer East Eagles on Monday.
For the second time in 3 days, Oxford took on the Eagles in the first game of the night. In the best of five matches format, Oxford came out swinging and on top of their game to win the first match 25-22.
The momentum didn’t hold and Oxford lost the second and third matches 20-25. The Ladycats fought back to push a fifth match and defeated the Eagles 25-23. In the game to 15, Oxford squandered away a 10-7 lead after Oxford hitters failed to produce a kill. East final server of the game scored 7 consecutive points to win the match and the game 15-10.
Oxford head coach Kristi McDevitt was very disappointed the outcome of the game.
‘We played hard and came out just like we needed to against this team, but for some reason, our momentum didn’t hold,? she said. ‘East didn’t beat us tonight, we beat ourselves.?
Freshman Brittany Moncrieff was a pleasant surprise for McDevitt, as she led all hitters with 8 kills.
Junior Danielle Wicker had seven, and Kaitlin DuCharme, Shana Jones, and Mykala Salquist had six kills. The loss put Oxford at 8-5-4 overall and 0-1 in the FML.
In the final game of the night, Oxford defeated Holly in four games to improve their record to 1-1 in the league. Wicker had 10 kills, Jones had 9 kills, and DuCharme finished with 7 kills and 7 digs for Oxford. Oxford hosts Clio on Thursday at 7 pm.
